I'd say go full blown balck and white. Paint the walls so the bottom third is black and the top two thirds is white. Chose a bright color, her favorite color, as an accent color. Then use this color for pillows, curtains and frames for ';art';.My daughter wants a checker board room. If we go with checkerboard bedding what color should we paint walls?
If the bedding is going to be black and red I would go with a cream walls. Then add red accent pillows and a large black rug to the floor. I think the bedding and wall the same would be overwhelming. If you want it all to be checker board. You could do black and while walls and red bedding. If it was my room I would also frame a checker borad and put it on the wallMy daughter wants a checker board room. If we go with checkerboard bedding what color should we paint walls?
lavender and aqua, with pink accents
Gotta add my two cents! I love the idea of a retro checkerboard look! Checkerboards don't have to be straight, they could take any shape, as long as the corners are contrasting, so bend them around for wall art. I would't do orange walls, cause next year she'll love blue. So make em' funky with a nice checkerboard on the walls up to chair rail height, 30'; or so. You could also take the checker pattern up the walls and do a border in the checker pattern. Either way I would stick with a white wall.
Unless. . . you know I just did a room in a deep muted orange and it looks really good. So depending on the lighting in the space (does it get good sunlight?) you could paint the walls an orange and let the checker pattern be the accent. Ooh, that sounds like a fun project. I love designing for tweenies!! Good luck.
the same color red you are going to use for the floor
Here is a link to some color viewers that may help you decide what colors will look good. Once you get there you can upload photos of the room as-is and then change the wall colors till you find what you like.

i say gray!!!!
Black and white are split complements, so if you wanted to stay with a monochormatic scheme, then the grey would work . You would be using the orange as an accent color. You could use that or the white and accent with orange in a vibrant hue and mix in purple, iris, indigo, cornflower, bright blue or teal. Purple being a tetrad, blue being a split or teal being a compement of the orange.
If you decide to do a black and white check wall, I would do the wall behind her bed with her bed facing the best view and add in the orange. With the other three walls, I think I would stick to the white.
So, in answer to your question, paint the walls white and bring in up to three of the accent colors. You could use it in the rug, lamp shades, artwork or chandelier, if you decide to use one. Colors work best in three. You could mix in some of the accents also with sheets or candles. Repeat around the room. Use black in frames in the artwork to anchor the room. You could hot glue some fringe on the shades also.
I think grey would give a cave like atmosphere if she does not have a lot of light in the room. You are really using achromatic shades with the white and black. If you have lots of light, you can use the grey. Accent with her favorite colors.
At 12 years old, they like what they like and it is an expression of their creativity. What colors does she wear? This is a good indicator for accents. Orange is a warm color, so balance that by adding a cool color. Sometimes, even the color that they dislike would work in a small dose.
Psychologically, it is something they are missing in their life.
I know if I wear red to a meeting, I feel more confident even if I don't necessarily like red. Sunny colors make me feel happy. Ask her what she dislikes and go from there.
Hope this helps in your decision. I apologize for the lengthy answer, but I feel that you really need to see the space to make a reccomendation about color. Choose the bedding first, then an inspiration piece, whether it be artwork or the rug. Then go for it. It wil be beautiful.
paint two walls black and two walls red?
Well if the checker boards are black and white i would suggest red walls with gray or sparkly sponged on checkerboard...just make the squares precise with masking tape and use the sponge to lightly get it in each box while still showing the definition of the squares.
neutral shes probably not going to like it within a couple months so dont do anything shes not going to like once shes older, maybe a tan or cream color
trust me shell grow out of it and wind up not liking it and then shell blame you for an ugly room
if you get checker board bedding, it will be too clashy. Use a color in the checkerboard bedding that there is not a lot of quantity of. it will look gr8
I have not seen the checkered look since the 80's.
fun idea with orange lime and green squares
