I like Megan's idea: Going with a color such as burnt orange, but rather than a bright, choose a more toned down version. Also, I would not use it on ALL the walls. I would try match the taupe color of the couch for the wall/walls that the couch does NOT occupy, and use the orange on the wall/walls that the couch does occupy. And if possible, change the rug color to the same color as the orange, or get an area rug to throw down in front of the couch that incorporates both the orange and the black.
And I would certainly incorporate the dining/breakfast area.....bring in as much light as you can, and use the orange on the wall with the window if possible and drape the window with a taupe or taupe and orange sheer scarf type valance. Let in as much light as possible.
Another color that I think would work well with this scheme is a brick red. Actually for me, I prefer the red over the orange, but brick red leaning towards the richer looking brown side of the red. Good Luck!
PS. You didn't mention it, but if there is a fireplace, you should consider that when choosing what color to paint each wall as well. If the fireplace is brick, or has a dark surround, use the lighter color on that wall. If the surround is a light color, use the darker paint on that wall. Burnt orange. It's a bright color and it would work well with black and taupe. You should get a few accent pillows and maybe a blanket. But you could also pick a blue and paint an accent wall orange (just one of the smaller walls). No matter what color you pick, don't make it too bright (like yellow or neon).
And your dinning area should coordinate, not too matched, but they should go with each other.
u should paint the living room a nice tan, or a calm blue.
